ILLEGAL MINING: BENUE LAWMAKER CRIES OUT

"H.M. 10 MOTION CALLING ON THE BENUE STATE GOVERNMENT TO INVESTIGATE AND STOP THE ILLEGAL MINING ACTIVITIES BY SOME INDIGENOUS AND FOREIGN NATIONALS IN LIEV II COUNCIL WARD OF KWANDE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BENUE STATE

 *The House;* 
 *Notes* that about five years ago, Some Unknown Miners accompanied by some indigenes of Monkwav, Liev II Council Ward of Kwande East Began to Excavate different Sites in the area under the Guise of Searching for samples of Mineral Deposits. The illegal mining disguised as search for samples continued on a small scale until 2020 When the foreign Miners arrived and commenced Mining on a large scale.

 *Further Notes* that the illegal Miners comprising some indigenes and foreign Nationals are Guarded by heavy armed security personnel from the Cross River State Regiment. The area which has no access road is being accessed through an illegal route from cross River State;

 *Worried* That apart from loss of revenue due to the state, these illegal mining activities have led to contamination of water Sources, Destruction of Arable Farmlands and General Environmental Degradation as well as Exposed the People of the Area to health Hazards.

 *Concerned*  that the illegal mining has made Monkwav and Agenago of Liev II a bee hive of activities occasioning the influx of unknown Elements whose presence have made the security of the Area unpredictable.

 *Alarmed*  that if not checked, the economic, Health, Environmental and Security Implications of the illegal mining going on in Kwande East may degenerate into security breaches as withnessed In Zamfara State, North West Nigeria.

 *Resolves* 

1. To condemn in strong terms the illegal mining activities going on in Liev II Council Ward of Kwande Local Government Area particularly, the Trespassing of Benue Territory by the illegal Foreign Miners;

2. To call on the Benue State Government to urgently set up a High-powered Committee to investigate and stop the illegal mining activities in Liev II Council Ward of Kwande Local Government Area;

3. To call on the Benue State Government to Open up Access Road to the hilly side of Monkwav, Liev II to ease Movement by it's inhabitants and Ensure Easy Surveillance of the Area by Security Personnel.

CHIEF OYEGUN OFFICIALLY JOINS ADC 16th July, 2025 A former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Oyegun, a former Edo State Governor, received the membership card of his new party on Tuesday.
